Halloween is fast approaching. If your kids are like mine were (a zillion years ago) face paint is a must have part of their costume. Instead of buying the face paint consider mixing your own. It is as easy as 1-2-3 and the ingredients are usually already on hand in your cupboard. I usually let my children help mix up the face paint which added to all their fun; although one kid’s excitement over making red blood face paint always worried me some.
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon flour
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
Mix together the cornstarch and flour in a small bowl; add corn syrup and water to this mixture and stir, stir, stir until it is a smooth paste. Make different colors by dividing paste into separate containers and adding food coloring.
If not using immediately, simply store in air tight containers until you are ready to paint faces. It will keep nicely on the counter-top so there is no need to refrigerate unless you think your kid deserves a cool down moment!
warning: some food colouring may last a few days on the skin so don’t go overboard with deep red, for example. I know all about too much red! And so does one of my kids who got teased for a week after his trick-r-treating one Halloween. He finally forgave me.
